GOC VIII Carbon Offsets / Renewable Energy Certificates
As the nation's leading renewable energy generator, NextEra Energy Resources will provide the Greening of the Campus Conference VIII with the highest professional standards in achieving carbon neutrality for the 2009 conference. NextEra will do so by providing a blend of certified RECs & carbon offsets to avoid the environmental impact of emissions generated from electricity usage at the conference, as well as those generated from hotel stays and airline/automobile travel of attendees and exhibitors. As NextEra collects emissions data, they will share calculations in order to assure carbon neutrality for the event.
Both the RECs and carbon offsets will be certified by the Center for Resources Solutions, the nation's leading third party independent consumer protection program of renewable energy and carbon offsets. See firsthand the stringent requirements involved in certifying eligible resources as Green-e projects at www.green-e.org.
- For indirect emissions such as air and automobile travel (scope 3), NextEra will provide renewable energy based Green-e Climate Certified Carbon Offsets. These offsets will provide Ball State University/AASHE with clear information about the projects they are sourced from, and guarantee that each offset represents only real, measured, permanent, verified, and beyond "business as usual" GHG emissions reductions. Each Green-e Climate Certified Carbon Offset will avoid the impact of 1 Metric Ton of CO2e generated from these emissions
- For emissions generated from direct electricity usage (scope 2), NextEra will provide Green-e Certified Renewable Energy Certificates ("RECs"). These RECs will represent emissions free electricity generated from new renewable energy facilities built after 1997. They will provide the assurance that they have not been double counted and go beyond what is required by law or RPS mandate.
NextEra Energy Resources is very proud to be the official offset provider for the Ball State University/AASHE conference. Integrating sustainability into higher education is vital in shaping the minds of tomorrow in order to fight climate change.
